The Chilean flamingo, Andean flamingo and James’s flamingo all live in South America, with the Chilean flamingo occupying the largest range. It is arguably the pinkest of all the flamingo species. The Caribbean flamingo, also called the American flamingo, breeds in South America and the Caribbean, although its range can stretch to the southern regions of Florida. They can be found in Africa, southern Europe, the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East. In total, there are six flamingo species: the greater flamingo, Chilean flamingo, Caribbean flamingo, lesser flamingo, Andean flamingo and James’s flamingo.Īs its name suggests, the greater flamingo, with a height of 110 to 150cm and a weight of up to 4kg, is the largest of the bunch, and is also the most widespread. And you can use that to attract a mate in a courtship ritual,” says Rose. “As a flamingo, the pinker you are, the healthier and better quality you are – it’s a direct reflection of how good you are at foraging. Interestingly, while flamingos are pink primarily as a by-product of their diet, their colour takes on a special significance during mating season. “It’s also worth noting this only works with pink pigments – you can’t feed a flamingo blue food dye and hope it turns sapphire, for instance!” A flamingo chick with its pink parent © Getty Images “Their skin, mucous membranes, egg yolks and even fat are stained pink and similar colours like orange,” says Rose. It’s these pigments that eventually stain a flamingo’s feathers – and that’s not all. So, how are flamingos able to eat these foods without falling seriously ill? Thanks to their specialised metabolism, the birds are able to process these harmful chemicals in the liver, breaking them down into functional components and pigments. All of these can be dangerous to many other animals as they contain toxic chemicals called carotenoids,” explains Dr Paul Rose, zoologist at the University of Exeter. I wanted something that felt almost late 90s, early 2000s, if that makes sense, because that's that time that I was talking about, that Dreamcast, PlayStation to Xbox era. It's a weird “open your diary” kind of thing.īut I felt we were going for a very certain direction, and like I said, it was a weird personal project for me, so I wanted to pick music that I grew up listening to or reminded me of an era where I really just had fun playing games or things that stuck with me. John Johanas: Surprisingly, very early on, the team was like, "John, you can select the music." There are tons of people's conflicting opinions on music and I know sharing a playlist is almost the most embarrassing thing that you can possibly do. Do the music choices in the game reflect the preference of the team? Is Mikami-san also a Nine Inch Nails fan? Hi-Fi Rush is a cel-shaded rhythm action game where your moves. ![]() Our cutscene director, Jun Watanabe, and I spoke at length about how we can do this, how we can do it in the stylized stuff. The cutscenes were an immense undertaking. Luckily, as we got further into development, most of us got the hang of what was necessary to do this, so that helped out. We have to create this new animation flow and people would make these cool animations, but we'd find it didn't feel like - hit the beat or things like that. The long answer is basically, we need to tweak how our animation system works so that every animation you do, whether it's a little bit early or late, it'll always, basically, interpolate it so that it'll land on the beat. ![]() John Johanas: The short answer is extremely, extremely, extremely difficult. How difficult was it, to time both the cutscenes and the in-game action to a rhythm? I've been playing through it, and you can tell see every cutscene matches that rhythm. IGN: One of the things I want to touch on is that Hi-Fi RUSH is not small. ![]() ![]() ![]() In this application, the motor is frequently installed on the transom alongside and connected to the primary outboard to enable helm steering.

The second scenario of the preview returns to engineer Diaz, and allows players to slowly manoeuvre a shuttle around asteroids, which felt rather mindless and low-stakes. There’s no need for ridiculous Quantic Dream-level quick-time events, but waiting four minutes to press a button seems like it would feel tedious after a while. The entire scene was played using button prompts placed within cutscenes, but it’s a reminder that choose-your-own-adventure games of this style should figure out a way to make these scenes more dynamic. The scene as a whole indicated that there would be some big alliances, choices, and hopefully some more mature topics explored, as the Federation is not portrayed as a neutral party. I was unable to tell how significant my choices would be, though at the end of the scene, Spock suggested something to the effect that we would have another chance to make said decisions. We cringed when we chose not to show deference to the queen during an important peace negotiation, who in turn aimed a disdainful frown in the direction of our Starfleet officer. As Rydek, you’re responding to questions from the Hotari queen about who the Federation is aligning with in the dispute, and also trying to defend – or allow – accusations that the Starfleet Federation is only there negotiating in the first place as an interested party with imperialist designs on the mine. In this scenario, you play another new character in the Star Trek universe – Commander Rydek – who, along with Spock, goes to negotiate control of a dilithium mine between two races: the Hotari, and the Alydians. The slow-paced and dialogue-heavy (both good for Trek fans) opening chapters we got to play showed off a number of interesting choices, which led to some strong character reactions.Īfter a brief introduction of a new character – engineer Carter Diaz – and his relationship to his Vulcan superior, the preview follows a lengthy story chapter involving a second character. Tonally, the pacing and focus on workplace-and-alien drama and decision-making exudes the tone of old-school Trek, and will have fans of classic Trek episodes jumping around more than Q. For developers who made their names at a studio known for weaving compelling stories into existing universes, the chance to work with an IP as big as Star Trek is almost certainly an enticing prospect – even if it comes with the challenge of nailing the tone of a series that’s been around for decades. I don't know how it worked, I still don't understand this puzzle at all, but I'm not complaining. But how can I know which way to avoid looking if it's random and there's no pattern? I know, I'll turn very slightly, just enough to see if there's a red glow, and then go the other way. So maybe the trick is to never look directly at a dead end. Hang on, it seems like if I turn towards a dead end on Hall 01 and then take the exit instead I always end up looping back to the start of Hall 01 again. I am so so relieved I'm not streaming this to people right now. I'm an impatient and easily distracted man, but I've been going around in circles for 8 minutes trying to work this out. There are no objects and there's one exit, so how am I screwing this up? It's not due to a lack of trying either. Man I feel like a total idiot for not being able to figure this out. You'd think the exit arrow above the door would have something to do with which path is the dead end, but it seems to be random. and a Hall 02 with a dead end on the right. Meanwhile songs like Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody', Right Said Fred's 'I'm Too Sexy' and The Simpsons' 'Do the Bartman' topped the charts. The biggest video games at the time were titles like Street Fighter II, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World and Sonic the Hedgehog. Now I'm trying to think about what I know about 1991. I wonder why they set the game 30 years in the past anyway, it doesn't seem to have any relevance to anything. But hey at least now I know that the year's 1991 at the earliest. Nope, nothing here that seems relevant to my current dilemma of being trapped in a hallway. Only a few though, I won't be going through the whole game. Oh, I should probably warn you that I'll be giving a few of the puzzle solutions away.
